MARÍA APARTMENT

Location: Balcarce, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Author: Architect Juan Manuel Rodriguez Llanos

Year: 2003

Covered surface: 167 m2

We were requested to finish a floor in a high-rise building for the house of my mother who had recently become a widow. Having a large family, six children all grown up and independent, this was the first time she was going to experience living alone.

The apartment, which was still in the structural work stage, didn’t have the necessary conditions for her emotional wellbeing. The place was entirely compartmentalized, which translated into multiple closed and empty rooms, which would deepen even more that feeling of possible loneliness. This is why we built an integrated place where she could feel in control of all the space.

The sun, the light, the color of her backyard and the natural and noble materials such as wood and stone, which reminded her of her old home, were fundamental project decisions to get to the desired objective.

The job was right because her adaptation and attachment to the place were instantaneous
